SRM University
and the Indian space
research organisation (Isro)
will join hands to develop a
nano satellite weighing less
than 10 kg.
Speaking to reporters,
SRM University vice-chancellor
Prof P. Sathyanarayanan
said the university
had approached Isro
chairman Dr Madhavan
Nair for developing a nano
satellite, which would be
stationed 800 km above the
earth in a polar orbit
The satellite will carry
high-resolution cameras for
picking up images meant
for data analysis. While
Isro will launch the nano
satellite with other payloads
in the polar satellite
launch vehicle (PSLV), the earth station for the purpose
of communication and
reconnaissance images will
be located on SRM University
premises, the vicechancellor
said.
Initially, the university
will be spending a few
crores for putting up facilities
like clean room to
develop the satellite. Prof
Sathyanarayanan said the
cost would come down to
less than Rs 50 lakh once
the university embarks on
developing a series of
nano-satellites in future.
“A team of 32 students
and scientists are working
on the project to develop
the satellite. We will be
meeting Dr Madhavan Nair
next month to sign an MoU
for this project,” the vicechancellor
said.
