Nearly a month after it launched a countrywide 24x7 toll free anti-ragging helpline(Ph:18001805522), the University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to rope in non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) to monitor its functioning to ensure that ragging victims get justice.
The UGC has invited Expressions of Interest from NGO’s which have been active in the field of monitoring activities in the social sector on a pan-India level, to take up the role of a watchdog to effectively curb ragging in educational institutionals.
The selected NGO’s will primarily be involved in providing information on non-compliance on the directions of the Supreme Court to the statutory bodies as well as violation of the regulations of the UGC and other statutory councils to the regulatory bodies and the committee appointed by the Supreme Court for ragging-related incidences.
“This system is expected to evolve as a foolproof counter-vigilance mechanism to crush ragging and deliver justice to the victims.
Merely registering a complaint on the helpline may not guarantee action from institutional heads.
