The University
Grants Commission (UGC)
has warned deemed universities
not to open off-campus,
establish new departments
or start new courses
without the approval from
the Commission.
The UGC has taken
serious note of the increasing
trend of violation of
guidelines laid down by the
Commission. It has also created
confusion among the
student community and
public, apart from leading to
numerous court cases across
the country,
Dr Chauhan, secretary, UGC has warned
that any deemed university
violates UGC’s norms, the
Commission will initiate
punitive action, including
recommendation to the ministry
of human resource
development (MHRD) for
withdrawal of deemed to be
university status.
